Before their transportation, a convict would often smooth down the surface of a coin and engrave a message of affection for their loved ones to be left with them as a memento, as the convicty was likely to never see them again. This quote comes from a Convict Lovr Token, signed by a William Maskell in 1818. The pictures and symbols are common motifs found on this and other tokens.
